Heard any good albums lately?
I'm always more interested in listening to a band's full album, as opposed to different mixes or anything. It's always more interesting to hear the context of music the way it's meant to be heard, I find there's so much likely to be lost intranslation otherwise. So... have you? Toward the beginning of the year I'm always super pre-occupied with the "Best Of" lists regarding the year before. I've been checking out albums from 2007 like it's my job. Here are a few I've listened to recently I very much recommend. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga GaJust fantastic, a really creative effort that translates well live, not only had I found a site offering a full live concert, I remember seeing them on SNL not too long ago. This album is brilliant, and each song unique and as valuable as the last. Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire and WaterTw...

Toward the beginning of the year I'm always super pre-occupied with the "Best Of" lists regarding the year before. I've been checking out albums from 2007 like it's my job. Here are a few I've listened to recently I very much recommend.

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Just fantastic, a really creative effort that translates well live, not only had I found a site offering a full live concert, I remember seeing them on SNL not too long ago. This album is brilliant, and each song unique and as valuable as the last.

Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire and Water

Two discs; the first, called Fire, isn't terribly new for a band like Thrice. Though creative and catchy, it doesn't so much surprise or inspire. The second disc, however - Water - is unlike anything I've ever heard from a screamo band. The raw power and drive that encompass the first half of the package is exchanged for atmosphere and undistorted sound. Lyrics both yearning and insightful, music rich in composition and discipline. Ridiculous.

I'm moving on to Josh Ritter, Circa Survive, The Spill Canvas and a few more. Heard anything else really good lately?

I had mixed feelings about a few of these records. I was disappointed by The Shins, I guess I thought it'd be better... seems to me like a few of the songs individually are greater than the whole. Bright Eyes was much the same, although there are some songs on there that I absolutely love.

Love Elliott Smith, meant to check out Of Montreal, have to look into Blind Terry and Pinback, they sound good. Oh, and did anyone else get the new Daft Punk live album? I know it's nothing new, but it affects me in ways I can't describe. It's great.

    Good albums from 2007? Hmmm....

Sea wolf - Leaves in the River
is a really good new band. They came through town and I went to see them and they were really good live as well. They kind of have a sound similar to The Shins. I'd recommend this album.
    Favorite Track: Middle Distance Runner

    Anaïs Mitchell - The Brightness
This is a great new folk album. Very calming and just a beautiful album.
    Favorite Track: Shenandoah

    Blind Terry - Single
Blind Terry is a very small new band that, believe it or not, isn't on wikipedia, which is my main sorce for information on bands (Sad right?). You can check them out here:
    http://www.myspace.com/blindterry
This band is very creative and original, in my opinion anyway. I just wish their single wasn't sold out so i could buy it.
Favorite Track: they've only been able to find 2/3 tracks and but i love them both!

    Menomena - Friend or Foe
This is a great album! Thats all i need to say, go give it a listen to.
    Favorite track: Wet & Rusty

I'm tired of writing the same thing over and over after each band, I'm sure it's annoying you as much as me, so instead i'll just listen good albums from 2007.

Newton Faulkner - Hand Built By Robots
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Pinback - Autumn Of The Seraphs (they do such amazing things with the guitar that it tickles my ears)
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
    The New Pornographers - Challengers
Jose Gonzalez - In Our Nature
    John Vanderslice - Emerald City
Joanna Newsom - Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band (EP) (If you want to try and listen to music that is completely different, and a bit weird, then give her a try. I mean come on, who uses harps as a main instrument?)
    Elliott Smith - New Moon
Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon

There you have it. Let me know if you like, or dislike, any of these albums.

Did you have you bands that disappointed you?
I was disappointed with Modest Mouse, Cocorosie, and Bright Eyes. Sadly they didn’t live up to my expectations.
